The reality is that this is not an accurate way of measuring actual weight. Muscle weight is heavier than fat, but also a lot more compact, which means that the different in shape is very apparent. For instance, a woman who is 5&#8242; 6&#8221; and weighs 140lbs but is very active, will have a lot of muscle tissue. Her overall percentage will be low, resulting in a slim appearance. The same height and weight in a woman who does not take part in physical <a href="http://weightloss-report.com/tag/exercise/" class="st_tag internal_tag" rel="tag" title="Posts tagged with exercise">exercise</a> will look quite fat. Those who are <a href="http://weightloss-report.com/tag/dieting/" class="st_tag internal_tag" rel="tag" title="Posts tagged with dieting">dieting</a>, particularly if part of their diet includes an <a href="http://weightloss-report.com/tag/exercise/" class="st_tag internal_tag" rel="tag" title="Posts tagged with exercise">exercise</a> regime, can really benefit from regularly measuring this percentage as it can motivate them by demonstrating how much weigh has really been lost.</p>
<p>Different methods are employed to measure this percentage. One of the most popular ways of calculating lean body mass is through <a rel="nofollow" rel="nofollow" title="bio electrical impedance" href="http://weightloss-report.com/goto/bio_electrical_impedance_technology/430/2" target="_self">bio electrical impedance technology</a>. This can be used at home through digital scales. A low current of electricity is safely passed through the body. It passes quickly through muscle tissue that is high in fluids, and slowly through fatty tissue that is a poor conductor. The scales will then work out the percentage automatically by adding information such as gender, overall weight, age and height. Other ways of measuring it include skin fold measurements, which is quite a complicated technology but can be highly accurate if done by a real professional; infrared interactance; and hydrostatic weighing (weighing while submerged in water).</p>

<p>What can you do with this information? Basically, it will allow you to work out whether or not you are healthy. There are some useful charts that demonstrate what the right percentage is for men and women of different ages. The results &#8211; underfat, healthy, overfat and obese &#8211; are a much better indicator than BMI. As an example, a woman of 25 should have a percentage of between 24% and 36% in order to be healthy. Anything lower than this would be classed as underfat. If the measurement is between 36% and 42%, the woman is overfat; and a measurement above 42% would put her in the obese category. These results will allow you to work out what your fat free mass is. Furthermore, you can use this information to reduce or increase your percentage and how to work towards this.</p>
